St Dominic’s star represents SA in Czech Republic

The tournament took place from April 29 to May 1.

A Grade 11 learner from St Dominic’s, Kara Wicht, is one of the 13 athletes and eight reserves who represented South Africa in the EU Nations u-17 Junior Women’s Waterpolo Championships in Brno, Czech Republic, recently.

Wicht and her team did South Africa proud by winning the gold medal. South Africa won four matches and drew against the host nation.

St Dominic’s congratulated the young star. Head of high school sport Colin Sandwell said that Wicht is not a stranger to winning medals.

“Kara’s hard work and dedication have paid off and she is an example to all water polo players at the school,” said Sandwell.

Her father, Richard, said the family supports her at all times.

“We were very pleased when she was first chosen and she put in the hard work. Looking at how they won, it shows that it was a team full of talent and hard workers, and I am so proud of her,” he said.

The father said that all the effort they put in as a family helped her reach her utmost potential.

“What she must know is that she must keep on reaching for her dreams. This means learning to balance school work and sport but I’m sure the school is doing everything as well to shape her future,” said Richard.

The results for the South African team side are as follows:• South Africa 28 – 4 Lithuania.
• South Africa 21 – 3 Ireland.
• South Africa 17 – 13 England.
• South Africa 12 – 8 Great Britain.
