Youngster has an ace up his sleeve

He plays as central defender and a goalkeeper.

Bryce Sampson, formerly of Superstars Academy, has joined Alexandra Black Aces Development Academy following a successful trial with the Bedfordview-based club.

The 14-year old is a central defender but can also play as a goalkeeper, so Aces has struck two birds with one stone.

The Woodlands International Academy learner has already linked up with his new teammates. He explained that it was always his dream to play for Aces.

“As soon as I heard there were trials, I knew it was my chance. My dream has now come true.”

The Grade Nine learner told the paper that from a young age he always had a ball at his feet. He said he was inspired by his grandfather who was also a footballer.

“I was always kicking a ball from a young age. I started playing league football in Germany at five years old. I was inspired by my grandfather, Ronnie Matthews who played for Boksburg F.C and Manchester United’s u-21 team.”

Bryce is a left-footed and strikingly tall centre back with the presence of Italian maestro Giorgio Chiellini. Like most defenders, his height is big and he is confident and will likely strike fear in opposing teams’ attackers.

“I played as a goalkeeper for the Johannesburg City Football Academy. I’m tall and I get to read the game better and I communicate well with my teammates. Up until now, I have played centre back for my school and Superstars Academy.”

The Beyers Park resident said he idolises Chelsea’s combative midfield workhorse N’golo Kante. It’s surprising that standing at 181cm, he looks up to a 168cm tall player. It’s understandable though because as a defender, you will be comfortable with a central midfielder with Kante’s quality in front of you.

“He is a destroyer who shuts down opposing teams’ play, giving his defence enough space to breath. I enjoy the way he plays on both attack and defence.” Bryce said.

His former coach at Superstars Academy Calvin Deetlefs said if he continues to work hard, he will enjoy a successful career.

“He possesses all the qualities of a centre-back. He is strong, tall and reads the game well. He has shown leadership in how he communicates and marshals his fellow defenders.

“He times his tackles well and always positions himself to perfection. If he continues to work hard, he will make it to the professional ranks quickly,” said Deetlefs.

With his speed and reading of game situations, Deetlefs added that Bryce is the man you want organising your defence.

“With him at central defence, we hardly concede a goal. He’s always in a good position and it’s like he knows where the opposition’s balls will land.”
