Damaged electricity box left unattended

It appears the electricity box had been damaged by cable thieves and power thieves who have illegally connected their properties.

Residents of Parkdene claim they have for a long time been trying to get the metro to repair the troublesome, ‘neglected’, damaged electricity box in Heldzinger Street, but with no success.

A concerned resident, who stays not far from the box, complained residents had been reporting the problem to the metro and nothing has been done. He stated the box has long been a cause of power outages, which has seen several homes on the street frequently left without power when the power cables melt, causing the electrical panel to keep tripping.

“We approached the metro about the state of our electricity distribution box, but not a single person from the metro does anything, although they do their monthly meter readings.
“We are being charged a monthly fixed charge for maintenance, but there is no maintenance. For me, these charges are thus theft,” said a resident.

Residents also expressed their concerns about the risk posed by the exposed live wires to inquisitive children.
“I have concluded that an electrocuted child or a fire may be the only things that may get the council to perform their paid-for duties.”

Metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said their energy division has investigated the complaint and a team has been dispatched to address the problem. It’s, however, unclear as to what could have led to the delays after the processing of the request for the repair.
