Trials set to develop youngsters

“For the past two days, these players have been excited and whether or not they are chosen, they have learnt something from us," said the coach.

The trials that recently took place for three days at the Boksburg stadiums held by Talitha Soccer Academy were set to develop and groom young players.

The soccer academy appointed former Tottenham Hotspur player and former Orlando Pirates captain Mbulelo ‘OJ’ Mabizela.

Young players from different backgrounds came to attend the trials that are going to prepare them for the second term of the Central League in Reiger Park next month.
The Windmill Park-based academy had trials for the u-13, u-15 and u-17 divisions.

Coach Lawrence Mthimunye said although it was not the number they expected, they worked with what they had.
“For the past two days, these players have been excited and whether or not they are chosen, they have learnt something from us.
“Some of them were just playing for fun and now they have realised that they can go far with football if they are passionate about this sport,” said Mthimunye.

Goalkeeper coach Gift Makgareetsa said the academy has experienced coaches that the players can learn from.
“The young goalkeepers are doing very well and I hope we can get the best out of what we have,” said Makgareetsa.

Musa Shabangu, a youngster from Cloverdene in Benoni who came for trials in the u-17 division, said the trials are a good experience for him.
“The trials are going to change the lives of many youngsters and even if some are not chosen today, they must keep on trying again and put more work in their training,” said the Grade Nine learner.

Mthimunye added they need a sponsor so they can empower the boys.
“We have love and patience for these players and we are not doing this just for the money because sometimes, you don’t find the talent you are looking for as some of these boys can’t pay fees. So, we are looking for someone to fund us so we can get sponsorship for these players,” Mthimunye added.
