Lesufi applauds Class of 2021

The province obtained a 100% pass rate in sign language and improved its pass rate of physical sciences from 72% in 2020 to 74.8% in 2021. Life science pass rate sits above 80%.

Gauteng MEC for Education Phayanza Lesufi said the overall performance of the Gauteng province’s 2021 matric class was extremely impressive, as the 2021 matric group managed an 82.8% pass rate.

Lesufi said he was satisfied with the overall performance of the matric learners during the Department of Basic Education’s announcement ceremony at Birchwood hotel’s conference centre.

Lesufi said: “Our 2021 matric learners performed extremely well to obtain their national senior certificates. If it was not for our Minister of Education Angie Motshekga, we wouldn’t be celebrating this victory.

“She stood firm against the notion that learners should stay at home during the pandemic and emphasised the need for learners to be in a classroom.”

A total of 168 913 learners enrolled to write their matric examinations. Among the group, only 132 856 learners were full-time attending learners and 42 883 of them were part-time learners.

Of the total learners, 55 773 obtained bachelor’s degrees passes, 34 132 learners attained diploma passes, 15 438 learners received higher certificate passes and 47 358 learners obtained distinctions in the province. A total of 79 learners from the province are shortlisted to be rewarded with national awards.

In Gauteng, 130 schools obtained a 100% pass rate. Approximately 462 schools obtained over 90% pass rate.

Out of the top-10 best performing districts in the country, four of them come from Gauteng, and the best performing district stems from Gauteng.

Raymond Mamabolo from Chipa Tabane Secondary School was announced as the best-performing learner in the township schools category.

Raymond said: “I’m proud and glad to have obtained distinctions in all the seven subjects. I managed to do it by studying hard.

“I advise learners who are in matric this year to work hard. If they take my advice, they will reduce the pressure and yield good results at the end of their matric tenure.”
