Sunward High learners accused of illegally detonating fireworks on school ground

This practice has apparently become a yearly ritual to mark the first day of the academic year at the school.

Residents of Sunward Pak have raised concerns about fireworks after the detonation of fireworks was reported at Sunward Park High School on January 12.

The Advertiser received a letter of complaint from residents who alleged learners at the school detonated fireworks on the school ground, adding this practice has apparently become a yearly ritual to mark the first day of the academic year at the school.

The letter reads: “Today at 10:40, a resident living in Cresta Road posted on one of our community WhatsApp groups that Sunward Park High School learners were setting off fireworks on the school grounds. It appears this has happened at the beginning of the school year for at least the last three years.

“Last year, it was reported to the school and apparently the police have also visited the school and yet it carries on. The learners also do this at other times, usually outside the school property, and the school claims it has no jurisdiction over learners once they leave the premises.

“Today, it happened when one would expect the children to be in the classroom, but it appears the staff members are either deaf or couldn’t be bothered to do anything about it. The fact is that it is illegal to detonate fireworks, so these learners are committing a crime on school premises.”
The Advertiser reached out to the school and the police for comment, but both institutions had not responded at the time of going to press.
