DPWI to rehabilitate decaying police building

The property has for years been left to crumble.

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) says it has kicked-started the process aimed at rehabilitating the crumbling state-owned building housing the Boksburg SAPS detective branch.

The Advertiser reached out to the department for comment after officers complained about being forced to work in a derelict building infested with reptiles and partly taken over by vegetation, which has turned the area into a jungle.

DPWI admitted that maintenance of the building in question remains its responsibility.

According to DPWI spokesperson Thamsanqa Mchunu, their department is aware of the condition of the building and as a result, a request to appoint a structural engineer to investigate and report on the remedial work required for complete repairs and renovations is underway.

“The problem will be addressed as soon as the process to appoint a structural engineer is authorised by the planning and maintenance budget committee of the department,” explained Mchunu.

Mchunu didn’t answer the question as to why for years the property had been left to deteriorate to such a bad state.
