WATCH: Learner firefighters show off skills

During these drills, that happen about three times a year, the learners get to extinguish live fires.

Learner firefighters from the City of Ekurhuleni and TUT conducted a night drill at the Leon Ferreira Fire Station on November 29.

Theresa Geldenhuys, City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services Training Academy senior district manager, explained the learners did a Fire Fighter I and I, Hazmat Awareness and Operations.

“The learner firefighters are taught different skills and these skills are combined to form drills or scenarios. One such drill, which is accredited by SAESI and is based on NFPA 1001 and NFPA 1072, is live firefighting with flammable liquids and/or flammable gasses.

During these drills, the learners get to fight live fires in a controlled environment. We can control the fire by either shutting down the fuel supply or instructors taking over from the learners should a problem arise.

The learners work as part of a team with their instructors to learn to fight these fires. Live firefighting is one of the objectives that must be reached before completing the training,” explained Geldenhuys.
