Reiger Park SAPS fights crime through sports

Young people from Ramaphosa, Delmore and Reiger Park flocked to the Ramaphosa Sports Ground to participate in the sporting event.

The Ramaphosa Sports Ground was abuzz with excited sports fans who participated in netball and soccer during the Reiger Park SAPS’ Sports against Crime event on October 9.

The sporting event was held in partnership with a local organisation called Thusang Development Programme and other stakeholders.

Wearing netball and soccer kits, scores of young people from Ramaphosa, Delmore, Delmore Gardens and Reiger Park participated in various sporting activities, which took place throughout the day. Participants each receive         gold medals.

Juventus FC from Delmore went head to head with Reiger Park United on October 9 at the Ramaphosa Sports Ground.

Before the games commenced, Sgt Lufuno Mudzuli of Reiger Park SAPS led a fun walk in the morning from the Ramaphosa taxi rank to the ground as part of raising awareness against crime.

Educational pamphlets were handed out to residents during the walk. One of the organisers of the event, Sgt Mudzuli, said the event aimed to draw the attention of young people from crime to sports because it has sufficient health benefits.

“We invited the youth from all our four policing sectors to join us so that we can motivate them to refrain from criminal activities. We have noticed that a majority of the suspects are young people so that is why we targeted them to get the message across. “We also chose to host the event in Ramaphosa because currently, it’s one of our crime hotspots,” said Mudzuli.

Nurses from Ethafeni CHC in Thembisa offered their vaccination services to the community. About 113 young adults rolled up their sleeves to be vaccinated against the coronavirus.

According to Cindi Buthelezi, although they had expected more than 200 people to vaccinate, she was happy that at least several people came through.

John Nkoai (44) said he was happy that finally, he decided to vaccinate. Another Ramaphosa resident Sophie Nthuli said when she saw the mobile clinic she dropped everything and went to vaccinate.
