N12 accident: Neil’s condition is now stable

Neil's wife is grateful to everybody who is supporting the family.

Rynfield resident Neil Brits (32), who was involved in an accident on the N12 on October 7, is now in a stable condition at the Netcare Union Hospital.

Neil, a qualified technician, was on his way to work in Kempton Park when the accident occurred at around 07:20.

His wife, Angelique Brits, explained: “We’ve spoken to a few witnesses and it appears my husband in his vehicle was standing still in traffic on the N12 at the R21 off-ramp. A truck driver then lost control of his vehicle.

“He bumped a few other cars and ended up on top of my husband’s car. The entire back of the car was under the truck. There appeared to be no attempt from the driver to stop. It’s a miracle my husband is alive,”

Angelique said. She added that Neil is in ICU and suffers from bleeding and swelling on the brain. His left ribs are broken and his lungs are slightly hurt. His face is also swollen.

“Doctors couldn’t exactly tell if he’s doing better but said he is stable. They tried to wake him up; however, he did not react well. There are pipes (such as oxygen) in his throat, which irritate him. Now, they are going to implant a trachea to try to wake him up again.“

His vitals are looking good, which is a good sign. We’re concerned about his emotional well-being. Even though he is not awake, he’s aware of what is going on around him.

“We’re now just praying and trying to keep our heads above water.”

Angelique expressed her gratitude to everybody who supported the family. I want to thank everybody for their love and prayers.

“Some of our friends even started to raise funds for us. I believe they’re doing it because we don’t know what lies ahead and what treatment he might need in the future. I’m so grateful because I didn’t even think of that.”

Some of Neil and Angelique Brits’ friends started to raise funds for the family.
