EG Jansen learner crushed by tractor tyre

The injured Grade Nine learner was airlifted to hospital.

The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed that a 14-year-old Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen learner is receiving the necessary medical attention in hospital after a tractor tyre accidentally crashed into him while at school on September 13.

The department said it was in contact with the parents regarding the learner’s condition.
According to Steve Mabona, Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, a group of Grade Nine boys were playing on the school grounds with a tractor tyre, which led to one of the boys being injured.

“School staff immediately attended to the injured learner, having called his parents to inform them about the incident and calling an ambulance for medical assistance. The learner was taken to a hospital where he is receiving the necessary medical attention,” said Mabona.
Mabona said psycho-social support will be given to the child and all those from the school who were affected by this incident.

Meanwhile, the school’s principal, Leon de Beer, also took to the school’s Facebook page on September 14 to notify parents and learners about the incident.

In the video, de Beer is heard saying: “I want to use this opportunity to inform you about a freak accident that happened at the school. One of our Grade Nine learners was injured after a heavy tyre fell on him. A staff member was immediately present.

“I also want to congratulate and thank Netcare 911 for their swift response. The learner was airlifted by a helicopter to a hospital in Alberton. He underwent an operation last night (September 13). This morning I was told the learner is doing well under the circumstances and that his condition is stable.
“I want to use this opportunity to ask parents and the school community to pray for the learner and his family. I believe he might be in the hospital for a long time, but we hope he will be back at school soon.”
