Voters are reminded to take their ID with them, either a green barcoded ID book, a smartcard ID or a valid temporary ID certificate.

The IEC urges young people, in particular, to take advantage of this opportunity to register and vote. Applications for special votes will open on September 20 and close on October 4. Meanwhile, to provide greater accessibility and convenience to voters, the Electoral Commission launched an online voter registration facility in July which allows new voters to register and existing voters to update or amend their registration from the ease and convenience of their homes or elsewhere.

According to IEC spokesperson, Kate Bapela, all eligible voters, whether registered or not will be able to register and update their details via a computer, smart mobile device or tablet.

Eligible voters can register in just a few easy steps:

• Go to https://registertovote.elections.org.za

• Click “Register to Vote Now”

• Enter your personal details

• Enter the one-time-pin sent to your phone

• Search for your address, or if you are at home, use the current location on your device

• Take a photo of your ID or submit a scan of your ID

• You will receive an SMS within 24 hours confirming your successful registration
