Dog rescued from an illegal mining shaft

After about five hours the dog was pulled from the disused mine shaft.

A five-hour rescue operation saw a five-year-old female Chow Chow being rescued from a deep hole at an illegal mining shaft around Blue Sky informal settlement on September 5.

The successful operation was carried out by members of the EMPD search and rescue and the SAPS’s Ekurhuleni K9 unit in collaboration with the Boksburg SPCA.

DEMS were among the first responders.

According to inspector Neo Moya of the Boksburg SPCA, two men arrived at the Boksburg SPCA office just after 16:00 and notified a staff member that they had seen a trapped dog inside a hole.

A Boksburg SPCA staff member investigated and found the hole was too deep to help.

The Boksburg SPCA believes that the dog had been trapped inside the illegal mining shaft hole for about two days before she was pulled out.

Moya had to phone the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services for assistance.

“When we got to the site we had to seek further assistance and that’s when members from the EMPD’s search and rescue and the SAPs’s K9 unit came to help.”

Moya said eventually after about five hours the dog was pulled from the disused mine shaft.

The inspector told the Advertiser that he believed that the dog had been trapped inside the hole for about two days before it was found.

“At this stage, we still don’t know how the dog ended up inside the hole but she’s now being taken care of at the Boksburg SPCA,” said Moya.
