Woodlands learners shine in English Olympiad

According to the South African Council for English Education (SACEE)'s website, the aim of the English Olympiad's is to enrich and deepen the candidates’ appreciation for the English language and its literature.

Learners from Woodlands International College recently excelled at the 2021 National English Olympiad.

This annual competition draws entries from all over the country.

Learners are required to study and interpret a collection of English texts. This year’s anthology included a collection of poems, short stories, monologues and dialogues.

The entrants were invited to write the Olympiad as they have all maintained an English average of above 80%.

According to senior college teacher Marina de Vos, the school is incredibly proud of this group of learners who entered the 2021 English Olympiad – the first group from Woodlands International College since 2016.

All four candidates were awarded a silver certificate for the Olympiad. The learners were required to attend weekly, online discussion groups to prepare for the examinations, while still managing the demands of Grade 12.

Gabriella Bonaretti placed first in the grade in the first term and was the top student in both Grade 10 and 11. She has been provisionally accepted to several universities in both the engineering and astrophysics departments.

Terence Redford placed consistently in the top 10 of the grade and is investigating options to study overseas in 2022.

Farihah Saib placed consistently in the top three of her grade and is considering studying medicine at a local or international university.

Sebastian van den Brink placed second in the grade in the first term and has provisionally been accepted to study drama and film at several universities.
