Boksburg teachers vaccinated against Covid-19

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said on June 28 over 200 000 teachers and education support staff have been vaccinated so far.

Teachers and education support staff from Boksburg schools heeded the call to get inoculated against Covid-19 after the government launched its vaccination drive in the education sector on June 23.

Laerskool Baanbreker, Laerskool Goudrand, Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen and Hoërskool Oosterlig are some of the schools in Boksburg whose staff received their single-dose Johnson & Johnson jabs at the Alberton Civic Centre Hall from June 28 till 30.

The Advertiser spoke to staff members from Hoërskool Voortrekker and Laerskool Goudrand to find out how they experienced the vaccine drive.

Hoërskool Voortrekker deputy principal Gerhard Joubert said: “I work with a lot of children and I feel better now that I’m vaccinated against Covid-19. I have flu symptoms, but other than that I’m okay. I would definitely urge others to get the injection. It’s important to get vaccinated so you can protect yourself and those around you against the virus.”

Laerskool Goudrand acting head of department Nicolaas Theron said: “My experience of getting vaccinated was relatively positive.”

Theron also encouraged community members to get their dosage of the vaccine.

“Many people die in car accidents on a daily basis, but it doesn’t stop people from driving. That was just the way I thought about the vaccine,” he said.

Furthermore, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said on June 28 over 200 000 teachers and education support staff have been vaccinated so far.

Motshekga added she is pleased with the programme and stressed that staff members scheduled to receive their jabs next week should make themselves available although schools were closed.

Schools are expected to close on June 30 and reopen on July 19.
