SPCA reports bucket pup is doing well

The Boksburg SPCA is appealing to the public to donate R50 towards Oliver's recovery treatment.

The dachshund-cross puppy surrendered to the Boksburg SPCA in a car oil-soaked bucket is recovering at a local vet. Staff has named the pup Oliver.

The owner recently walked into the society with the bucket and told staff he no longer wanted the dog and said it had been sick for a long time.

According to the Boksburg SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore, Oliver was in very poor health.
“The owner put the bucket down and inside was a brown, skeletal figure of what looked like a dog, soaked in car oil. The little pup lifted his head and looked around and when we pulled him out of the bucket we noticed that he could still walk. We knew there may be hope.”

The little dog was rushed to a vet for assessment. SPCA staff had to bath Oliver four times to remove the car oil from his body. After his bath, Oliver was given a bowl of food, which he devoured in seconds.

“Oli tested negative for biliary, his heart has been checked and he’s been dewormed. He, however, has a mild condition of cherry eye, which can be rectified with a small surgical procedure, making the eyes as good as new. Oliver is still very anemic and has been put on a drip for the night. His body has been through so much as his spirit was completely broken; however, he is eating well and is far more alert than before. For further check-ups, blood samples will be sent off to a laboratory in Johannesburg for testing. Let’s hope those blood tests don’t reveal any underlying problems,” Finnemore said.

Oliver had to be bathed several times to remove the car oil from his coat.

Donations pour in
The pup’s plight has attracted a lot of support from animal lovers across the world. Scores of animal lovers from as far afield as the UK, Pennsylvania and New Zealand have made financial contributions towards Oliver’s medical treatment.

The Boksburg SPCA is appealing to the public to donate R50 towards Oliver’s recovery treatment.
