Izinja Zempilo holds a successful clean-up campaign

Social club members encourage the community of Ramaphosa to take care of the environment.

As part of their aim to inspire men to play a crucial role and make a change in their communities, members of a local social club called Izinja Zempilo, known as Triple P held a clean-up campaign in Ramaphosa on April 27.

The group of about 17 men, including volunteers, spent their time on Freedom Day picking up litter along Fish Eagle Street.

Armed with brooms, spades and garden rakes, the team had already filled about 100 bags with litter around midday.

Getting their hands dirty for the benefit of the community are members of the Izinja Zempilo who cleaned around the Ramaphosa taxi rank on Freedom Day on April 27.

According to the club’s vice-chairperson Malwela Ramovha, they decided to make a difference in their township.

“Since the establishment of the club in 2016, we have been assisting by lending a hand in events such as funerals, weddings and birthday parties. We then decided to expand and reach out to the community as well. We organised the clean-up campaign to encourage the community to take care of the environment as well as to show the public that we are against gender-based violence,” said Ramovha.

Chairperson of the club Ernest Rashilo said they started cleaning the area from Extension Two to Extension Five.

“While cleaning, we observed challenges such as blocked drains, which cause flooding when it rains. Moreover, we had a great turnout. We hope to get sponsorship to assist us to buy sanitary pads for disadvantaged girls as part of our campaigns,” he said.

Members of a local social club called Izinja Zempilo, known as Triple P, took some time out from their busy schedules to clean Fish Eagle Street, Ramaphosa, on Freedom Day on April 27.

Rashilo highlighted that they had to buy refuse plastics, masks and water from their own pockets.

“It would be an honour for us to receive support from local businesses or individuals. We would like to thank everyone who came out to support us, especially a group of women who joined us during the clean-up campaign,” said Rashilo.
