Local club cricket cancelled

Safety first as 2021 season is put off.

With the Covid-19 pandemic still lingering despite the country being on level one lockdown, preventative measures were the top priority when the Eastern Cricket board decided to cancel all local club cricket.

This is according to Eastern Cricket club cricket administrator Berrelyn Platt, who also added that all the games clubs play are completely organised by the clubs themselves and have nothing to do with the union.

The normal season start time of September is the period eyed for the return of club cricket.

“Risks related to Covid-19 and limited playing facilities were taken into serious consideration when the board decided to cancel the 2020/21 season,” said Platt.

“Most of our clubs and players come from townships and to control the whole situation by ensuring that every single club adheres to Covid-19 safety measures is very difficult.

“We put lives above everything else.

“Most of the playing facilities were also vandalised during the lockdown and it would be unfair to only allow the Premier League to return and not the other leagues. If we allow one league to return, then all the leagues should also be allowed to return. With all of this taken into consideration, it was decided that the season be cancelled until further notice.”

A return date will be communicated as soon as the Advertiser learns of it.
