Watch: Animal lover celebrates 30 years of grooming animals for the Boksburg SPCA

Her passion for animals motivated her to get involved with the Boksburg SPCA

Boksburg SPCA chairperson Willie du Plessis and inspector Hope Makalapha recently handed over a lifetime honorary membership certificate to Angela Brinkley from The Doggy Parlour in Freeway Park.

The certificate served as a token of appreciation to Brinkley for the unwavering support she has provided to the society for the past 20 years.

During the intimate handover at The Doggy Parlour, du Plessis said: “We saw the need to acknowledge her for the work she has been doing for the SPCA by grooming the animals at no cost. We bring animals to her that are in a bad condition and she grooms them voluntarily and with love.”

Brinkley said she felt grateful and honoured to be presented with such an important award.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Brinkley said she started getting involved with the Boksburg SPCA from 1990.

Angela Brinkley from The Doggy Parlour in Freeway Park shared that she will continue her exciting journey with the Boksburg SPCA for many more years to come.

She said her passion for animals motivated her to get involved and contribute towards animal welfare.

“I assist the Boksburg SPCA in any way possible. I groom dogs that are up for adoption for free so that they look cute and appealing to the public, and will hopefully make them more adoptable. A clean, well-groomed dog will always catch someone’s eye. I also do many emergency grooms where the poor dog is so matted it can hardly walk or it has terrible skin issues caused by years of neglect. These grooms really help the dog feel more comfortable instantly and it’s an absolute necessity,” she said.

The groomer said it gave her fulfilment every time she helped the animals feel more comfortable in their own skins and seeing the relief on their faces after being groomed.

She advises pet lovers to stop supporting pet shops that sell animals, as well as backyard breeders.

“There are not enough homes for the sheer number of animals in rescue organisations all over the country, so if one buys from pet shops then it takes the homes away from the animals that are already in rescue shelters. Sadly, many of them end up getting euthanised,” she said.

Brinkley shared that she will continue her exciting journey with the Boksburg SPCA for many more years to come.
