Oversight committee to police the metro police

Finally, the residents of Ekurhuleni will now have control over the metro police department

The City of Ekurhuleni has recently introduced the newly appointed members of the EMPD Civilian Oversight Committee.
The members are Clr Olga Makgoba, Louis Steenkamp, Lihle Ndzelu, Raymond Gundula, Doctor Mikal Reza Patel, Melane Kruger and Clr Khehla Madlala.
This independent oversight of the City’s police will, during its three-year term, be an integral part of overseeing the EMPD, ensuring increased police accountability to the public, and that the department does its job as mandated by the Constitution and traffic laws.
“The seven members are ready to hit the ground running.
“Their function includes creating processes for risk governance, monitoring and reporting to the City manager, creating clearly defined duties and improve effectiveness within the EMPD, amongst others,” explained EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng in a statement.
MMC for Community Safety Clr Pheladi Frans Mmoko and the EMPD chief of police, Jabulani Mapiyeye, and his management team, gave a warm welcome to the oversight committee members.
The event, held in Bedfordview, was also graced by the City manager, Doctor Imogen Mashazi, who joined virtually from her office through Microsoft Teams.
The City manager and the MMC wished the oversight committee good luck.
The chief of police said, “This is a gap we wished to fill since the inception or formal launch of the EMPD in February 2002, and today, we are delighted because we have the immediate team who will somehow assist in policing the metro police.”
