Truter talks 4@War loss

Truter walks away from Hammer Gym

Boksburg junior middleweight pugilist Tristan Truter took a subtle dig at who is now his former trainer, Harold Volbrecht, following his latest loss against Roarke Knapp in the third/fourth place fight of the 4@War tournament.

The boxing event concluded at Emperors Palace on October 10.

It was Truter’s second loss in succession which arrived in similar fashion to his last loss against Boyd Allen late last year before the pandemic.

It was a well-deserved victory for Roarke, who stung Truter with a devastating hook in the early stages of the second round to settle for bronze.

The finale of the top 4, which was contested by Brandon Thysse and Allen, was won by the former.

Speaking to the Advertiser about the loss, the lanky Truter appeared to take a swipe at Volbrecht, who was his trainer before and up until the end of the fight.

“I didn’t have the right training,” said a frustrated Truter at the beginning of his soliloquy.

“My defence wasn’t that great in the fight and I got caught with a good shot but big changes are going to be made soon,” he explained hours before news broke that he had left Volbrecht as his trainer.

The Advertiser also questioned Volbrecht about the loss.

“I think (he) Truter has talent but he makes a lot of mistakes. We’ve been trying to work on his defence for about two years now but it just hasn’t worked out. He’s taller than most of his opponents, so it’s easy for his opponents to catch him.

“He also doesn’t keep his distance between him and his opponent, he likes being close and you always risk being caught like that,” explained Volbrecht.

“Take nothing away from Roarke [Knapp], he fought very well and gave a much more improved performance compared to his fight against Thysse [Brandon] during the first round of the tournament.”

Golden Gloves’ next and last event of the year, which is set to be headlined by Kevin Lerena, is scheduled for December 12 at Emperors Palace.
