Driver escapes unharmed after fire engulfs car in Sunward Park

Firefighters arrived, but nothing much could be saved as the blaze had already destroyed everything

The driver of a sedan escaped when his car burst into flames while driving along Rondebult Road just after midday today (October 7).

Fire crew members from the City’s Disaster and Emergency and Management Services (DEMS) were called at about 12.25pm and rushed to the scene.

According to DEMS spokesperson Wiliam Ntladi, when the crew arrived, the vehicle was already gutted by flames.
“No one was injured. Only the driver was in the car; he got out when it started to smoke. He was found watching helplessly as his property was destroyed by the flames.
“Firefighters contained and extinguished the blaze. Nothing much could be saved as the blaze had already destroyed everything,” said Ntladi.

Information gathered on the scene suggests the cause of fire is a faulty electrical wiring system.

“The driver told officials he smelt burning rubber and on inspection after pulling over, he was met by flames of the burning electrical wires behind the rear seat. He salvaged some of his belonging from the vehicle before notifying emergency services.
“Fortunately, no injuries were recorded and the scene was handed over to the law-enforcement unit for further logistical needs,” explained Ntladi.
