Two Boksburg schools inundated with more learner applications

The online system was introduced to make it easy and convenient for parents to submit applications rather than queue at a school

Freeway Park Primary School and Boksburg High School has received a high number of applications for Grade One and Eight for the 2021 academic year, which is above the capacity of the schools.

According to stats released by the Department of Education, Freeway Park Primary received 761 applications, while the school has a capacity to accommodate 180 Grade One learners.

Meanwhile, Boksburg High recorded 2 000 applications, with the school capacity of 285.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said where the number of applicants is more than the available spaces, the remaining applicants will be transferred to schools with available spaces.

Mabona indicated that when the online admission system was opened for admissions on June 25 to July 25, 255 735 applications were received.

“Placement pressure is determined by the difference between the capacity of a school and the total number of applications qualifying for placement at that school. When comparing the 2021 unique applications (255 735) to available spaces (211 634), an assumption can be drawn that most learners will be placed,” he said.

However, Mabona stated that most schools in Gauteng are already over populated based on admissions in previous years.

“There is an increasing demand for spaces in densely populated areas. As a result, admissions pressure is experienced in such areas within the province,” Mabona said.

Online learner placement period
The online 2021 admissions placement period for Grade One and Eight will commence on October 1 and is scheduled to end in November.

“Based on the capacity of each school to accommodate learners, offers of placement will be released to qualifying applicants on October 1. Remaining applicants will continue to receive offers of placement up to October 31 as spaces become available,” Mabona said.

Mabona stated schools that reach their capacity will be identified and locked for further placement.

Applicants who could not be accommodated at the schools that they applied to will receive offers of placement at schools with available space from November 1 to 30.

To accept offers of placement, parents are urged to log on to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za. For enquiries on placement parents may call 0800 000 789.
