EMPD members foil planned armed robbery

The team found the weapons hidden under a mattress and in a cupboard

Leads from an anonymous informer about a planned armed robbery led to the discovery of different high-calibre weapons, including rifles, fully loaded magazines and a large quantity of ammunition.

It’s understood a gang of thugs had planned to commit the robbery at an undisclosed site within the City of Ekurhuleni on September 21.

Acting on the received information, the EMPD Specialised Task Team raided a flat on Isiphingo Road in Yeoville, Johannesburg, on September 20. Nobody was found in the room at the time.

“The EMPD Crime Fighting Team tactically demonstrated their house penetration skills at an unoccupied room in a block of flats and found four two-way radios, one pepper spray canister, one bulletproof vest, one AK47, two LM6 assault rifle, one AR15 assault rifle and 12 fully loaded magazines with 360 live rounds.

The items were found hidden in two sports bags underneath the mattress and one in the bedroom’s built-in cupboard,” explained EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

Local SAPS members were summoned to the crime scene and the weapons were handed over to them so detectives could start conducting thorough investigations.
