Beyers de Klerk dies age 78

De Klerk was the mayor of Boksburg from 1985 to 1988

Former Boksburg mayor Beyers de Klerk died at his Libradene home last night.

As mayor between 1985 and 1988 and as the owner of De Klerk’s Estate Agents and Auctioneers for many years, de Klerk was a well-known and controversial figure in the city.

He also became chairperson of the management committee, which played an instrumental role in taking Boksburg to city status, and was a member of the Boksburg Five, which backed several charity initiatives and the highly successful community awards function known as Boksburg Celebrity of the Year.

Prior to this, the function was known as the Renault Celebrity of the Year and de Klerk was the final recipient of that title.

He was also a life member of the ERPM Golf Club and the East Rand Scots.

De Klerk’s wife, Charlotte, died on April 8, 2018. The couple had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary just a month before, on March 9.
