Crime update: Bullets fly in Bardene, men followed from bank

The Boksburg North police have opened numerous attempted murder cases during the weekend of July 23 and 26.

On July 24, police found nine empty bullet cartridges on the scene where a 60-year-old armed response officer, miraculously, sustained no injuries after being shot at when he responded to what police say was an attempted house robbery in Bardene.

According to the Boksburg North police spokesperson, Const Justice Ramaube, while the officer was patrolling the area he noticed four men in a VW Golf GTI stop at a house.

“Three of the men apparently got out of the car while the driver remained inside. The armed response officer drove closer to the house to see what the men were doing and the three immediately opened fire on him, riddling his vehicle with bullets before fleeing the scene,” Ramaube said.

The officer told police when the three men were shooting at him he took cover outside the vehicle.

“When he raised his head he realised the vehicle’s doors and windscreen, including the in-vehicle camera which could have assisted in the investigation, were damaged,” Ramaube said. “It is not known what the suspects were looking for at the house, which apparently belongs to a local businessman.”

Bank following

In another attempted murder incident, on July 25 a 58-year-old man went to a bank with his colleague to withdraw R80 000 to pay their workers.

After the two colleagues were done withdrawing money, they drove to a garage in North Rand Road without realising they were being followed.

“While they were having a chat inside the vehicle, they saw a man standing in front of the car pointing a firearm at them. One of the colleagues also withdrew his gun and a shootout ensued,” Ramaube said.

The victim told police his colleague shot one of the suspects and his colleague was also shot at by another suspect.

His colleague was left injured and the robbers failed to steal the cash. The injured man was taken to hospital for medical observation.

The police have opened attempted murder cases for both incidents and anyone with information should contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
