Virtual race to raise funds for rhinos

Local businesswoman Sharon Janse van Rensburg is combining her love for rhinos with her passion for running to raise funds for the conservation of the gentle giants.

The Insimbi Legacy Projects is calling avid runners and community members to participate in their Run For A Cause virtual race to assist them in protecting rhinos.

Participants from all over the country can register at www.virtualrun.co.za to run, walk or jog five or 10km from any chosen location.

The race can be completed from July 12 to July 31 and the registration fee is R100.

Insimbi Legacy Projects in need of support for rhinos during lockdown

All contributions will go directly towards saving the rhino at the Insimbi Legacy Projects reservation

Competitors will be able to submit results after the race by sharing data from their specific tracking apps on smart devices like a health watch.

Discovery Vitality and Momentum Multiply members can use this opportunity to earn health points. Top 10 racers will also receive a virtual medal.

The idea of a virtual run was conceived by local businesswoman and ambassador of the Insimbi Legacy Projects Sharon Janse van Rensburg, who explained the NPO is urgently in need of support due to the lockdown.

We’re still unable to host our Adventure With A Cause weekends, where the public can visit the reservation. The weekends do not only generate income to fund our anti-poaching unit rangers and provide care for our rhinos, we also rely on the extra eyes and ears from people on the ground.

“More movement means better chances of early detection and being a deterrence to rhino poachers,” the ambassador explained.

She highlighted the race is part of a series and will be held once a month. Carmela Lattanzi started the project to involve the public in the fight against poaching after one of her widely admired rhinos, Insimbi, was killed in 2014.
