EMPD recovers car hijacked in Villa Liza after high-speed chase

The man, in his 30s, was arrested and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and trying to evade police after the high-speed chase

A blue Nissan Almera sedan was hijacked in Villa Liza at about 3.15pm on May 23 before EMPD officers and a car-tracking company recovered it in Klippirvier, following a high-speed chase through the area.

According to EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng, the car, fitted with a tracking device, was hijacked from the owner by unknown assailants next to Barry Marais Road and was recovered in less than an hour by the EMPD Training Academy officers and Cartrack officials.

The chase began at about 3.40pm when the hijacked car sped away after the team spotted it driving on the R550 Road in Klippirvier

With the tracking company’s crew on the ground and in the air (using a helicopter), giving live updates on the speeding car’s location, EMPD officers gave pursuit on the dusty road and managed to apprehend the driver after he lost control of the car and rolled off the road, landing into a nearby veld.

The driver, who sustained slight injuries, was handed over to the Sedibeng SAPS, as the area falls under their jurisdiction.

He is expected to appear in the relevant magistrate’s court soon.
