Mercy Haven, a shelter for abused women and their children, is operational during the lockdown.

The shelter has been recognised as an essential service provider to the entire community of Ekurhuleni.

They enable the victims to be empowered and rise above their current predicament.

Mercy Haven operates under the auspices of the St Dominic’s Catholic Parish Church and provides basic needs such as nutrition, primary healthcare, clothing, education, psychological assessment, counselling and development assistance.

Women at Mercy Haven have also come up with a unique way to keep busy during the lockdown by making their own sanitisers, blankets, and planting vegetables.

Sanitiser are scattered around the shelter, including the entrance of the shelter.

According to the manager, Maria Pereira, they are adhering to the social distancing protocol as well as keeping the house hygienically clean at all times.

“Mercy Haven is in the process of refurbishing the skill centre where we will teach the women crafting skills, such as knitting, crocheting and sewing,” Pereira said.

To donate any essential needs to the shelter, you may contact them on 010 444 0109, email them on info@mercyhavenubuntuhouse.co.za, or visit their website at www.mercyhavenubuntuhouse.co.za.
