Non-functioning street lights in the city remains a concern

The Advertiser is aware that in numerous parts of Boksburg street lights are not working.

Frustrated residents from Madeley Road are no longer reporting faulty street lights in their area because apparently their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

According to resident Frik van Dyk about 98 per cent of the street lights in the area are not working.

“At night our area becomes a dark city and this poses a risk to us residents who use that road on a daily basis. Pedestrians are also not safe because they become victims of crime,” said van Dyk.

He said that due to scores of potholes in their area, motorists tend to swerve in any direction to avoid potholes and hence this puts the lives of pedestrians in danger.

“I have reported the matter since last year, and even some of the residents in the complex where I live have also reported it, but nothing has been done,” said van Dyk.

In Ward 32 some of the streets lights are not working in Boksburg East, Kruger Street, Heidelburg Road, Hospital Street and Plantation Road.

Ward Clr Marius de Vos said some of the street lights have not been working since 2018 and he has reported the matter.

Ward 22 Clr Ruhan Robinson said in Fourteen and Fifteen Avenue, Paul Smit, William Street and Beyers Park some of the street lights there are not working. He has also reported the matter.

Ward 42 Clr Eva Mgcwama said she has reported some of the street lights in her ward which are not working. This includes Ilowe, Idada and Ihhashi streets.

According to Mgcwama, when she reported the matter to the metro last year she was told that illegal connections in the informal settlements are the cause of street lights not working.

“I was told that residents are illegally connecting electricity from the street lights to their houses, which prevents the street lights from functioning normally,” Mgcwama said.

Ward 99 Clr Mduduzi Luvalo highlighted that street lights are not working in Windmill Park Central. He further mentioned that in Villa Liza three high masts are also not working, but he has informed the metro about that.
