Soup kitchen in Boksburg South offers hope to the needy

Donations and the assistance of volunteers are needed

A few community members are taking it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

Reinette van der Merwe and Linda Tolkens initiated a soup kitchen where they provide approximately 150 underprivileged people with soup and bread in Kingfisher Avenue on Tuesday mornings.

Van der Merwe explained that their initiative expanded and that there are now a handful of volunteers assisting with the distribution and cooking of the soup.

The organiser further highlighted that the free and nutritious meal comes from their own pockets; however, they do receive support from New Beginnings.

“Serving the hungry is a call from the Lord and we wanted to reach out to the people who need help. It’s not just about the food; we want to spread hope and His word.

“We tend to lose hope so quickly. Therefore, we also give these people Bibles when possible.

“We’re proud to say that the initiative is growing. We now have three collecting points as more people became involved.

“Two of our youngest volunteers are Nienke and Naude Badenhorst. They help us give the people their soup,” Van der Merwe said.

“We do receive occasional support from the community and we’re thankful for these contributions. Fruit and vegetables are always welcome. It’s always satisfying to give them something extra like a fruit or yogi sip. ”
