Residents help save vulnerable children by fixing up crèche

Unsafe conditions prompted the Department of Social Development to suspend funding of the centre.

A large portion of the biggest crèche in Ramaphosa, Noncedo Pre-School, was recently declared unsafe for occupation.

This prompted members of several churches in the area, the school committee and SGB to voluntarily dive into action and fix up the run-down property to serve the dozens of children of the centre.

The team spent almost the whole day on January 26 renovating and cleaning the property and cut the overgrown vegetation in the yard.

Seen in the run-down section of the property are (from left) pastor Cynthia Nyathi, Chris Wilson, apostle Martin Allies, Nataniel Mohale, pastor Sandra Allies and pastor Mokone Kleinbooi.

According to one of the school committee members, Chris Wilson, they decided to do something because the decision to declare the section of the property unsafe has also contributed to the Department of Social Development’s decision to suspend its funding of the centre.

“We are trying to reverse the situation because the facility takes care of dozens of children from underprivileged families who cannot afford to take their children to other centres,” said Wilson.
