Set realistic New Year’s resolutions

By keeping your resolutions realistic and working on a small series of goals, you can stick to your 2020 ideals.

With the new year arriving, we are once again considering what we can do to better ourselves. The problem is, however, that New Year’s resolutions often fall flat in the weeks following the holiday season as our lives return to normality. This is not necessarily the way it has to be.

When choosing your New Year’s resolution, make sure it is something realistically achievable. Aiming to have a bodybuilder’s physique or halve your weight by February is not feasible. Setting the bar to high can lead to unnecessary stress that might make you give up the chase early.

Make sure you make the change for yourself. Only when you are doing something for you can you truly be committed to changing for the better. Having a support structure around you is important, but being internally motivated is what will keep you set on your path.

Divide your resolution into manageable chunks. Trying to do everything at once will be overwhelming. If you focus on small goals that lead to your larger resolution, you will have a sense of achievement which carries through the journey and motivates you to keep going.

Keeping these things in mind can help you achieve what you set out for in 2020. Remember to stay true to yourself and should you fail keep in mind that it is only a small thing and that there is a lifetime ahead to try again.
