Hadji prevails against the odds in squash tournament

The Eastern closed tournament promises to attract more players next year, with a number of juniors coming through the ranks.

The annual Eastern closed tournament was recently held at the Boksburg Squash Centre.

The tournament attracts the Eastern’s top players to participate in order to qualify to play in the SA inter-provincial tournament, namely the Growthpoint-sponsored Jarvis Kaplan Cup.

The Boksburg club champion, Pano Hadji, entered the tournament seeded fifth. His first opponent was fourth-seeded Tristan Henderson.

With Henderson playing above his maturity years, his second game 3-0 loss was far from bad. The win allowed Hadji to move to fourth position, where he faced number one seed Zeweli Makgalemele.

It was a tough contest, but Hadji prevailed against the odds and took the spoils 3-0, a win which put him on a collision course with second seed Tikana Mtombeni for the final showdown.

The final was played in very good spirit with both players showing good sportsmanship throughout the match. Hadji again came through with a 3-0 win, thus making him the new Eastern squash senior champion.
