Eastern Gauteng’s number one to represent SACD in squash

The Excelsior College matriculant has been riding on a crest of a wave in the last 20 months, with his leap to the number one rank followed by an impressive showing in Cape Town last June, earning him provincial colours.

Eastern Gauteng’s number one ranked squash player, Pierce Robinson, will be hoping to squash his way to triumph when he heads to the Inter-provincial Tournament in Stellenbosch in mid-June.

Robinson, who assumed the number one ranking in his province early last year, qualified for the inter-provincial meeting following his excellent exploits during a qualification tournament in Bloemfontein in April.

He will be representing the South African Country Districts (SACD) team.

He said: “I’d like to thank coach Nick Hjiphilippou who has always believed that I can do well from the very start when I wasn’t so good, he never gave up on me and is still helping me improve.

“I also thank my dad, Grant, who has always inspired me to keep doing well because he’s also quite good.”

Grant introduced Pierce to the game some five years ago when he invited him to a squash tournament at the Boksburg Squash Club.

Pierce also draws inspiration from one of the game’s greats, Britain’s Nick Matthews, whom he met at the Parkview Squash Centre earlier this year when he visited the country for coaching clinics.

Matthews won the two most prestigious tournaments in the professional game, the British Open and the World Open, three times each. He reached a career-high world ranking of world number one in June 2010.
