Vagrant situation at local post office to be monitored

In 2015, the Advertiser reported on the seven-week project of the DA to keep the environment at the Boksburg post office clean.

The post boxes used by hundreds of residents for many years in in Leeuwpoort Street are getting more difficult to access due to the presence of vagrants.

This is according to Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos.

De Vos has for some time received complaints about the vagrants at the post office.

“After receiving complaints, I went there regularly and found strange people loitering around the premises, drinking liquor and consuming drugs.

“I have engaged the acting postmaster twice and reported to him that the post office has been invaded by vagrants, and that the numbers of vagrants sleeping there overnight and hanging around there all day is increasing daily. It seems to be turning into a veritable hostel for local street people,” de Vos said.

“I have in the meantime found out the post office is on the SA Post Office list for refurbishment during the 2019/2020 financial year. This will include the installation of a fence around the post box section where the homeless people are currently sleeping and the installation of two gate access points which would be locked after hours.

“In the interim, the SAPS and EMPD have been informed of the transgression.”

De Vos also noticed that the the post office is short of essential supplies as staff members are using used A4 paper to print vehicle licences.

“The post office does not have a storage of supplies and we are using the correct materials for every service that we offer,” said Litshelethemba Lalendle, manager at the post office.
