Girls at Villa Liza Secondary School welcome donation of sanitary towels

AfriSam is also constructing two classrooms at the school.

AfriSam, in collaboration with the Imbumba Foundation, provided sanitary towels to about 890 girls from Villa Liza Secondary School on April 25.

South Africa’s leading cement and concrete company, AfriSam has joined the cause to ensure that young girls in Ekurhuleni stay in school during their monthly menstrual cycles by providing them with free sanitary towels, a supply that will last for four months.

The Imbumba Foundation runs the Caring4Girls programme, which is an initiative which provides sanitary care for underprivileged girls across South Africa.

Lihle Mthethwa addressed the learners about puberty and she demonstrated how to use a sanitary pad. Helping Mthethwa to demonstrate is a Grade 12 learner, Phindile Mgiba.

On the day of the handover, learners were taught how to use sanitary pads and were given a platform to raise some of the issues they face as young woman.

Jabu Motlhako, Afrisam ESD professional, said: “We are extremely proud of this initiative as it gives young girls their dignity by ensuring that they do not miss school in the next few months due to a lack of necessary hygienic products.

Richard Mabaso from Imbumba Foundation spoke about vision of Caring4Girls programme.

“AfriSam is passionate about the success of a girl child and we believe that where we can assist in achieving success, we will always lend a hand.”

Expressing gratitude for the donation of sanitary pads, Sylvia Lepheana, the school principal, said this initiative was the first of its kind to be done at the school.

“It breaks my heart when a learner approach me or other staff members and ask for sanitary wear. I am very pleased that AfriSam has selected our school as a recipient. We hardly receive help like this.

“This initiative will surely relieve parents. It will also help the girls stay in school and motivate learners to work harder and do better in their upcoming exams,” Lepheana said.
