#IMadeMyMark: Students ready to take their power to the voting booth
South Africans will be voting in the national and provincial elections. The Advertiser spoke to a couple of first time voters who expressed their feelings about taking part in the May elections.
Students at Damelin College Boksburg said they were ready to make their mark for the first time in the upcoming elections.
Rose Nkuna (23): “I’m definitely going to vote in May and it is going to be my first time. My dad had to take out a personal loan just for me to get back to college, so I hope the new government will provide free tertiary education and create employment opportunities.”
Stefan Coetzer (23): “I will be voting in the upcoming elections to make a difference. I feel that corruption is preventing South Africa from improving.
“This country will fall apart if nothing is done about the high unemployment rate. Creating employment opportunities will ensure that people earn a living, thus reducing the rate of poverty and crime.”
Asanda Dlamini (19): “I’m very excited about voting for the first time in May. This is just me exercising my right in the constitution and democracy.
“I’m concerned about the high rate of unemployment, and to overcome this obstacle South Africans shouldn’t rely on the government alone.
“The country doesn’t have money, so both government and private sector should come up with ideas and solutions together, such as internship programmes.”
Wade Lochenberg (18): “I’m going to vote because I want changes, and voting will be giving me the opportunity to voice my opinion.
“I think providing the youth with internship programmes will help young people to gain the necessary experience.”
