Three suspects to appear in court over murder, Taxify robbery

Police believe they have made a major breakthrough in the series of robbery cases where the perpetrators target Taxify and Uber drivers.

The Boksburg police have arrested three men suspected to be involved in two recent separate cases – a robbery of a Taxify driver and a murder in Boksburg.

The suspects were arrested at their place of residence in Jerusalem informal settlement on February 13.

According to the Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Const Ntsako Ledwaba, investigation led Sgt Azwi Mphaphuli and Const Thabo Makomene of the Boksburg detective branch to the informal settlement where the trio was found.

The men, one of them a Taxify driver who allegedly works with the robbers targeting e-hailing drivers, were charged with both counts of murder and robbery, and they are expected to appear in court this week.

The men aged between 28 and 30 will also be linked to the recent rash of robberies of Taxify and Uber drivers in the city.

It was also found that one of the suspects was featured on the police’s wanted list.

He is implicated in a robbery case that recently happened in Boksburg.

The suspect appeared in court on Friday, and the matter was postponed for further investigation. He was remanded in custody.

Ledwaba said investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly used the e-hailing app to their advantage when looking for their next victim to pounce on.

“Our investigation indicates that in all the cases, the suspect used the same modus operandi, ordered the Taxify drivers via the e-hailing app and then robbed them,” said Ledwaba.

The police are urging other drivers who have been victims of such crimes to come forward and report it to the Boksburg police as the suspects are being investigated and could be linked to other similar crimes, which occurred in the area as from last year.

The station commander, Col Daniel Baloyi, applauded his members, described as diligent and hard-working officers, for doing a sterling job in the execution of their duties.
