Ward councillor targets the resurfacing of Kingfisher Road

Some of the things that are still in the pipeline for Van Dyk Park, include the upgrade of the substation, housing development, a play park and a gym.

The Advertiser had a chat with Jackie Reilly, Ward 31 councillor, about service delivery issues in her ward.

In Boksburg, the ward consists of Van Dyk Park and the portion Sunward Park.
She mentioned that a deteriorating road in Van Dyk Park is currently being fixed by a contractor hired by the metro.

“The work is expected to be finished by the end of January,” said Reilly.

Reilly said in her Integrated Development Plan (IDP), she has tabled that Kingfisher Road will be resurfaced and redone, hopefully during 2019.

“The reason why I want that whole road resurfaced is that there are potholes and cyclists are being knocked down.

“There’s also a need for a non-motorised walkway for people to walk to and from work.”

She said some of the enclosed areas in Sunward Park need general maintenance such as street lights, road markings and road maintenance.

“In Van Dyk Park some of the water interruptions residents face were caused by contractors cutting through the cables. Also burst pipes occur randomly in Van Dyk Park.”

Challenges

Some of the challenges faced by residents are faulty meters. A new programme is needed to reinstall the meters.

“Once or twice in a month, Van Dyk Park experiences electricity problems. All that we can do is to report the matter to council.

“Power outages often occur in Van Dyk Park during the early hours of the morning. Residents would then contact the call centre, but nothing gets done until we get hold of a top official to inform them that the power is out.

“So this clearly indicates that there’s a huge breakdown of communication, either between the consultants or the officials.

“There are lot of things I had hoped would have been completed by now in my ward, but due to budget, we must wait. If I had money specifically directed to my ward, things would have been easily run.”

She also bemoaned the lack of pruning the trees.

According to Reilly, the community continually demands jobs.“It’s a daily fight to address these issues. To some it may seem as if we are not doing anything, but we are constantly on the roll trying to get things done,” she said.
