Boksburg lose against Kempton

Boksburg were just ultimately outlasted by the home side who were led by a Brandon Harwood 56 not-out.

Defending Eastern Cricket Premier League winners Kempton Park began the new year in winning ways at CMH Boksburg’s expense with a three-wicket victory at the Barnard Stadium on January 13.

The visiting CMH Boksburg outfit didn’t give a shabby account of themselves after losing the toss and ordered to bat first when they registered a team total of 214 in their allotted 50 overs.

During a post-match chat with Boksburg skipper Adam Forbes, who did not have the best of days with the willow, he said his side were the better XI until the latter part of the game.

His assessment wasn’t far off from the bullseye.

Opening batsman Kane Horwell, like he did at the beginning of the first round of league play last year, showed the kind of form that has seen the local side compete among the frontrunners with his hit of 58.

Boksburg continued to demonstrate the level of form required to beat the champions, especially in their backyard when Horwell’s fellow top order batsmen produced big hittings with Gareth Lonie registering 40 and number four Willie Moolman ending with an unbeaten half-century.

However, their contemporaries’ contributions just fell short.

The home side responded with three wickets taken by Neels Bergh and Divan Posthumus respectively, with Sarel Myburgh responsible for Boksburg’s seventh lost wicket.

Kempton went on to end with 216/7 after 46.4 overs.

Boksburg’s top wicket-getters were Mike Heger (2/39; one maiden) and Matthew Hollard (2/42; 2).

Boksburg skipper Forbes said: “We were definitely the better team up until over 37, then I think we started to fatigue on the field and it showed in the bowling in those overs. We weren’t clinical towards the death and they capitalised.”

Kempton captain Johan Fourie could not be reached in time.
