Good Samaritan finds wallet, returns it to owner

Themba Mthembu did what few would have done, especially at this time of the year when cash flow is at its peak, when he took in a lost wallet to the Boksburg North police station.

The wallet, which belongs to Daryl Mendes, was picked up outside Virgin Active at the K90 shopping centre on December 13.

Mendes’ wife, Alloutte, who brought the story to the Advertiser’s attention, said: “Themba picked up Daryl’s wallet outside the K90 Virgin Active on Thursday morning early (December 13) while walking home from a night shift job in Witfield.

Mthembu lives near Actonville in Benoni and it takes him two and a half hours to walk to work and back every day.

“Despite working a full night shift, he went out of his way and dropped it off at the Boksburg North police station to make sure we got it back. He even told us that he used the R20 that was in it to buy some cold drink. What an honest, good person who went beyond the call of duty.

“We are in awe and thank him from the bottom of our hearts; he has indeed made this a better place, one act of kindness at a time.”

As a way of returning the good deed, Alloutte posted the story on Facebook, and Boksburg cycling store Cycle Lab came calling. They have since given a bike to Mthembu to make his travels to and from work easier.

The Mendes family also extended their gratitude to the two policemen who took the wallet back to their house. – @SabeloBoksburg
