Watch: Security guard thankful to survive at the hands of protesters

During the scuffle, the protesters took the guar's wallet, train ticket and his shoes.

A security guard got injured in his leg while trying to escape from protesters who threw a petrol bomb in one of the rooms, where he was hiding, inside Reiger Park Sports Arena’s club facility.

Mkhuseli Mtsali said protests started around 8pm on December 3.

Disgruntled residents of Joe Slovo informal settlement took to the streets on the morning of December 4 and blockaded St Anthony’s Road and Leon Ferreira Drive with tyres, stones, rubbish bins and tree branches.

They said they are sick and tired of waiting for what they call empty promises made by the ANC-led municipality.

“At 12pm they started looting the Pakistan shop at the Oos-Rand Taxi Rank. I then phoned the Boksburg police and they told me to phone the Reiger Park SAPS. The police arrived and tried to disperse the crowd with tear gas.

“I ran inside one of the rooms to escape the tear gas. Around 6.20am a group of people then made their way to the arena where they threw the petrol bomb.

“I begged for my life and they opened the door for me. When I got outside I ran to the police who were at Leon Ferreira Drive trying to control the crowd.”

He was transported to the Tambo Memorial Hospital.
