Take note of legalistation to prevention and combat trafficking

The National Freedom Network consists of role players across South Africa who are working against human trafficking.

To most, it might be perceived that there is no legislation in place to deal with human trafficking directly.

According to Marina Reyneke, operations manager at the National Freedom Network, this is not the case and reminds the public of the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act 7 of 2013 which became effective from August 9, 2015.

“This is the legislation addressing human trafficking in South Africa,” said Reyneke.

She also pointed to the South African Counter-Human Trafficking Resources website (https://nfnresources.yolasite.com), which contains academic research and reports regarding human trafficking.

“On the website, you will find links to current and older press releases, video clips, recommended books to read and movies to watch that deals with human trafficking.

“We have also uploaded academic research and reports with a focus on South Africa. There are also some learning links.”

Reyneke said they aim to empower, equip and encourage those in the field by being:

• a point of connection for those interested in the issue and the work of combating human trafficking;

• a channel of communication between the role players (or network partners), between the provinces and between government and civil society;

• a network of collaboration, as this is not an issue that only one person or organisation can work against on their own.

“The National Freedom Network has also assisted with the launch of the brand new resource line, 0800 222 777, when it comes to dealing with human trafficking to ensure rapid response and effectiveness.

“The line takes calls all day, seven weeks a week. Call specialists are specially trained professionals who follow international procedures ensuring the fastest response to each case.”
