Passion for hockey runs in the veins of Boksburg High learner

The aspiring Gabriella is also making inroads in the coaching and umpiring side of the game.

Boksburg High School learner Gabriella Monique Ferreira dreams of one day becoming a South African national hockey player and represent the national side at the Olympic Games.

And she’s well on her way and on the right track.

In a career that spans back to primary school, Ferreira participated at Stompies Hockey Academy at Martin School between 2012 and 2014 before a bigger break when she was selected to represent the Eastern Hockey Association at the u-13B regional tournament.

Fast forward to where she is currently, she’s scheduled to take part in the Pro Series Indoor (PSI) Hockey Tournament in Cape Town next month.

Her involvement in the game she loves has aggressively progressed since her primary school days.

The u-13B tournament was soon followed by appearances for Eastern Gauteng Quaggas at PSI tournaments.

These tournaments included featuring for the u-13 side in 2014 in Cape Town, the u-14 side in 2015 in Durban, and again for the u-16 team in 2016 and 2017, both in Cape Town, and receiving full colours for each year.

This is just her performances in PSI hockey.

  • Club level

On club hockey level, she represented the Benoni Northerns Hockey Club in 2015 before being named the Most Consistent Hockey Player of the Season the following year.

The years 2016 and 2017 also saw her represent the Falcons on u-21 level and also representing Jeppe St Andrew’s Hockey Club in the woman’s second league.

She was also nominated for the Benoni Northerns Sportsperson of the Year Award for 2017.

Just to mention some of her other accolades this year, she starred for the Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association at the u-18A provincial tournament in Pietermaritzburg earlier this year, receiving her full colours in the process.

Gabriella  was also named the Best Senior Girl Hockey Player for 2018.

She also starred for Jeppe St Andrew’s Hockey Club in the women’s second league before being ascended to the women’s premier league halfway through this year.

She received her mini-level one for umpiring at the u-16 regionals in July this year. This after completing ground level courses for coaching and umpiring through the Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association in 2016 and 2017.

“I hope to one day coach hockey for a club or school and make a difference and an impact in the hockey careers of children,” she said. – @SabeloBoksburg
