St Dominic’s learners showcase their art work

The work was showcased at the annual art exhibition on October 30 at St Dominic's.

Incredible artworks were produced by the St Dominic’s matric girls of 2018.

The evening bore testimony of the fruit of the artist’s labour and bloomed into a special occasion of the artistic talent on display.

Each matric girl had to complete four works during the school year. Two of the pieces are based on the theme “It Takes a Huge Effort to Free Yourself from Memory” and the other two pieces are based on the IEB exam theme “Outside the Centre, Things Fall Apart; the Centre Cannot Hold”.

Each matric art learner had to work hard to produce artworks that inspire viewers to consider things in a new light.

They spent countless hours working on art journals, doing research, writing about their art, looking for inspiration, materials and ideas to create artworks that do not only meet the exam requirements but also express themselves and find their uniqueness in art.

Out of these two themes, other themes emerged such as alcoholism, family dynamics, stress at school and pollution in the environment.

“I am so proud of my learners, these artworks are a way of allowing them to express what they are going through,” said St Dominic’s art teacher Julia Pieterse.

“It is an outlet, an opportunity for them to express their life experiences.”

Pieterse explained that as a teacher she enjoyed seeing the learners develop their skills and grow in their individual talents.
