Wilbers places second at Miss Universe

Some of Wilbers’ other highlights this year include an IFBB World Championship crown she won in Slovenia and a Gauteng title.

Sunward Park fitness star Penny Wilbers finished an impressive year on a silver note as she won the runners-up medal at the Mr and Miss Universe amateur and pro competition in Italy on October 13.

Wilbers won the silver medal in her natural miss fitness over 40 category. She also competed in the miss figure category where she placed sixth.

She said: “This year the line-up was tough but South Africa did absolutely fantastic. We got trophies for the best team and brought 25 trophies home.”

The country also won overall male and female honours.

Beyond the Italian finale, Wilbers’ 2018 schedule included the Pro Diva, Fire and Ice, Boksburg Classic and provincials shows.

She also participated in three local shows.

On 2018 being her best year in her career, she explained: “I think this year I looked my best, every year one is supposed to look better and I think I achieved that. Everyone wants to be the winner, but I’m content, she (the winner) deserved the win, she looked good.

“I just have to work harder next year. This sport is a difficult one, you never know what to expect.

“You don’t know any athlete until they get on stage with you.”
