Watch: Procter helps to hone skills of future cricket stars

Procter will be at the Birchwood Hotel on September 28 to talk about his book, titled Caught in the Middle, and his cricket foundation. -

Proteas legend Mike Procter visited CBC Old Boys for a cricket-coaching clinic on Saturday, September 1.

The one-off session was meant to equip the next generation of cricketers with the knowledge and skills needed to become a professional cricketer, or even make the Proteas, said Procter.

The clinic was open to underprivileged children from around the East Rand, but instead it saw approximately 30 children from CBC attend due to unforeseen circumstances.

Despite the minor setback in planning, Procter, who was an excellent all-rounder during his playing days, said he was happy with what he saw.

“It’s always difficult to have one session with the kids because you need much more time to properly coach, but it was good to see them interested and willing to learn. It was good to see them actually enjoying the session,” said Procter.

“We played in-net cricket and had some one-on-one coaching with some of the kids. Preparation and coaching is very important in sport.

“I’ve always believed in foundation. You can have the biggest and nicest-looking house, but without a foundation it will collapse, and the same goes for cricket and every other sport. “If you’re prepared and the foundation is there, you give yourself a very good chance to succeed. This is what the clinic was all about.”

“I must also give credit to the coaches. You can tell they know their stuff by just interacting with the kids. They’re doing a really good job.”

Director of sport at CBC, Justin Stoop, said: “A lot more schools were invited for the clinic, but they didn’t pitch for various reasons, so we jumped at the opportunity.

“The clinic was a success for the profile of cricket because whenever guys like Mike share their knowledge and get involved in growing the sport, it’s a boost for cricket.”
