EMPD Equestrian Unit beefed up with extra personnel

The Equestrian Unit’s advent was in 2005 with only five members.

Three metro police officers became fully-fledged members of the EMPD Equestrian Unit following an intensive six-week basic course under the tutelage of the local service provider by the name of Pro-Equestrian based at Fairleads in Benoni.

The three recruits gained their badges on Thursday, August 16 at the ceremony held at the EMPD Equestrian Unit main office  at Petit.

The unit current total complement is 15, including three women. Of the three graduates who gained badges and presented with certificates one is a woman and two are men.

According to Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, the Equestrian Unit forms part of the Specialised Units at EMPD whose duties include patrolling designated areas on horseback, enforcing laws and providing crowd control to maintain public safety.

“They may also be involved with other duties such as search and rescue, traffic control and the pursuit of suspects.”
