Locals come out in force to commemorate Mandela Day

Mandela Day is celebrated each year on July 18, and this year was the 100 year celebration of the icon's birthday.

As part of Mandela Day celebrations, local organisations spent their time performing acts of kindness on Saturday, July 21.

To celebrate Madiba’s legacy, Man Recycling donated scores of toys and served lunch to the underprivileged children of the informal settlement located next to Boksburg East railway station.

Staff members and Mandla Nkosi, owner of the recycling company and chairperson of the Ekurhuleni Waste Management Association, spent time playing with the children and teaching them about the importance of recycling and how recycling helps to conserve natural resources.

* Meanwhile members of Thrive Church in Boksburg split into groups and visited several different community centres where they spent their time doing their good deed for the day.

The places visited included House of Mercy Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centre, Hospice East Rand, Boksburg Library, and Tambo Memorial Hospital.

The teams were hard at it painting, cleaning and feeding residents and donated much-needed items, including food hampers.

The leader of the group which visited the rehabilitation centre, Gareth Birley, said the church’s Mandela Day initiatives at the different locations, were designed to honour the anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela and celebrate the birthday of Madiba who would have turned 100 years on July 18.

The people who took part in the charity project are members of the church’s group called ‘Life’.
